We spoke to Chelsea's captain after the Community Shield!

After scoring the first penalty in yesterday’s shoot-out, Gary Cahill must’ve been in high spirits.

But it was Arsenal who got their hands on the Community Shield.

“A penalty shoot-out’s a cruel way to end the game,” said Gary.

“Today’s disappointing because we prepared well for this.”

When asked about the decision to let keeper Thibaut Courtois take their second spot kick, Cahill said:

“I think he took one against PSG not that long ago and he’s been practicing them in training and, to be honest, he’s been smashing them in. He felt confident in terms of taking it, he felt like he wanted to take one.”

“Unfortunately it didn’t work out today.”

The game might not have even reached a shoot-out if Pedro had not been dismissed for a lunge on Mohamed Elneny.

“It’d be nice to finish the game with eleven men when we play here”, Gary said.

“The last two games we’ve finished with ten men and then it’s obviously difficult. I’ve been told it was an orange and it seems to be that when we play here things go the other way if it’s a 50-50 decision.

“Up until that point, when we lost the goal and the man, I felt in control of the game.”

FEELING short?

Chelsea’s squad depth has been questioned this summer and Cahill seemed aware of the situation.

“The back of the programme was interesting today!

“In terms of quality we certainly have that. We just have to hope we don’t have too many injuries and obviously the new players who have just come in, they’ll be vitally important for us and the quicker they settle in the better.”

One of those new players, Alvaro Morata, may’ve fluffed his penatly, but Cahill thinks he’ll be up and running before long.

“He’s been welcomed and I’m sure he feels part of the group already.

“He’s a massive player, he’s massively experienced even at a young age and we all need to rally around him and make sure he starts the season well and bangs goals in for us.”

Despite the arrival of the £58m forward, Cahill knows this season will be anything but easy.

“It’s going to be a tough season, no doubt about it.”
