Is this the coolest job in the world?

Nick Channon produces the world’s favourite footy game – FIFA 16! This month he invited MOTD mag to EA Sports HQ to play the new FIFA 16 three months before it even hits the shelves! We sat down with Nick and asked him about his unbelievable job!

HI NICK, HOW DID YOU GET SUCH A COOL JOB?

Nick says: “I left school to become a golfer but soon decided I need to get a proper job! I’ve actually been with EA Sports 23 years. I started in the UK working on EA’s marketing team, then moved to EA’s main base in Vancouver in 1996. I’ve been working on FIFA since FIFA 12!”

WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY IN THE OFFICE FOR YOU?

Nick says: “I’m the producer so my job is to make sure FIFA is the very best game it can be. I oversee other producers who look at specific areas of the game. One might look after the goalkeepers, one might look after the animation. Other areas that have their own producers are Ultimate Team and Career Mode. It’s a pretty varied job!”

LIONEL MESSI HELPED YOU OUT WITH THE GAME’S MOTION CAPTURE – HOW DOES THAT WORK?

Nick says: “We have a massive motion capture facility at our HQ in Canada which does motion capture for all EA titles, not just FIFA. We do a lot of capture for the moves in each FIFA game using local professional players, but then we’ll visit players like Messi in Barcelona!”

WHAT DO THE PROFESSIONAL PLAYERS THINK OF EA SPORTS’ FIFA?

Nick says: “Everyone has an opinion on their statistics – most think they’re faster! Rio Ferdinand had some great banter with us last year, he was angling to be faster! It was great to see. It’s great to hear professional athletes giving us feedback, it means they’re engaged with the game which is great.”

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WHO MIGHT LIKE TO DO YOUR JOB ONE DAY?

Nick says: “If they want to be a programmer and actually code the game then there’s lots of courses you can do at school and university. A lot of people rise up the ranks through testing, they test FIFA for us and give us feedback. We see people who give us good ideas and sometimes invite them to become permanent members of the team!”

SOUNDS GREAT! HOW DO WE BECOME TESTERS?

Nick says: “You can just apply! Games companies are always looking for testers, especially in the summer!”

DO YOU HAVE A MESSAGE FOR MOTD MAG READERS?

Nick says: “It’s great to see the support we’ve had from younger players, they’re very important to us. Younger people who play our game are people we hope continue to play our game for years to come. We always enjoy hearing their feedback and it’s great to see – it means a lot to us!”

Pick up MOTD mag next week when we'll be revealing some of FIFA 16’s amazing new features!
