What does MLS mean?

Major League Soccer. Don’t call it ‘the MLS’ – American’s hate that!

When does the season run?

March through to October – those yanks can’t handle the cold weather!

How old is it?

The 20th season starts this year! It was officially created in 1995 as a requirement for the USA hosting World Cup 1994.

How many teams are there?

Two new teams join this year taking numbers up to 20: Man. City-backed New York City FC, and Orlando SC. The league wants at least four more teams by 2020.

Who is the best?

LA Galaxy have won the most MLS Cups (five). They have Robbie Keane up front and will soon have Steven Gerrard in midfield to replace Landon Donovan who retired in December.

How does the league work?

MLS uses a play-off system. The top 12 clubs at the end of the season qualify for a knockout competition to determine the winners of the MLS Cup.

Which MLS players might I know?

There’s loads of ex-Prem players in MLS like Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders), Robert Earnshaw (Chicago Fire) and Tim Cahill (New York Red Bulls) to name a few!

How popular is it?

Last season saw a record average attendance of 19,151 (the average in the Prem is 35,918). Seattle Sounders have the biggest support in MLS, their average is 43,734 – over 2,000 more than Chelsea!
